The most recognized name among its developers is that of Professor Phil Barker, who officially acknowledged as the developer of the model, but he did not come up with single-handedly. The article describes Phil Barker’s research-based “Tidal Model” approach to meeting the mentally ill patient. The approach is based on ten patient-centred obligations. This approach is being implemented at the general psychiatry department at Middelfart and the adolescent psychiatry department at Odense.

The Tidal Model is based upon four premises concerning practice, which Barker developed in the mid-1990s with the “expert nurse” focus group (Barker, 1997).
